Indian farmers have had a sensational political victory over the prime minister, Narendra Modi, who has decided to roll back the controversial farm laws that sparked more than a year of public protests.

In the biggest climbdown of his seven years in office, Modi said in a televised address today that his government had tried and failed to convince farmers that the laws were in their best interests.

“We have decided to withdraw all three agricultural laws. In the parliament session starting later this month, we will complete the constitutional process to repeal these three agricultural laws,” he said.
